The Biggest Bathroom Trends of 2016 (Source: Pexels.com - used as royalty free image)

We spend a lot of our business hours poking around (and beneath, above, and through) bathrooms throughout Red Oak, and one of the many things we’ve noticed is that bathrooms have a fashion and a style all their own.

Like dresses or cars, bathroom designs go through trends, fads, and phases that go in and out of fashion. The design choices for bathrooms last year have already been forgotten in the minds of many homeowners and designers, replaced by the “hot new thing” of this season.

So, looking to redesign your bathroom in the back-half of 2016? With our thanks to Houzz, here are the bathroom design trends that the experts have been following – and loving – this year:

1.) Form and Function

More than ever, designers are rethinking the bathroom space in terms of storage and increased functionality. Don’t let your small bathroom feel cluttered, or your large bathroom go to waste! Instead, renovate with the idea of maxing out your powder room with more shelving or storage spaces, a revamped medicine cabinet, or space-savers like hanging baskets and towel racks.

2.) Pastels and Light Colors

Pastels are the hot color of 2016, and the bathroom is the ultimate place to try them out. Try adding flashes of hot pink or purple with eye-catching towels or bathmats, or go toward the realm of “soft” pastels on your walls with a fresh coat of paint or colorful tiling.

3.) Fresh Flooring

And, speaking of tiling, 2016 may be the year to take a new look at your floors. There are all sorts of fresh approaches that designers are taking to bathroom floors this year, including oversize and handmade artisanal tiles, natural-feeling “duckboard” flooring, or brightly-colored or irregular tile patterns that stretch across floors and walls alike.

4.) Natural Vibes

Wooden accents – in flooring, cabinetry, and accessories – all promise to be a major style point in bathroom design this year. Besides the conventional spots to add wood, designers are now rethinking the bathroom as a space for furniture, including footstools and standalone cabinetry. And that’s not the only way to add a more rugged, natural feel to your bathroom: Consider using earth tones when you repaint, or even bringing houseplants into your bathroom (after all, the water is right there, right?).

5.) Industrial Elements

On the flip side of the coin, many designers are considering metallic and industrial elements in 2016. In addition to conventional metallic fixtures and appliances – like faucets, shower heads, and bath-knobs – designers are experimenting with metal art pieces, or all-metal fixtures (copper baths, rich, metal sinks). To really push this design choice to the next level? Consider stripping your bathroom’s finish down to concrete, or playing with other fun “industrial chic” design elements with your light fixtures, shower doors, or window coverings.
