Why Does My Kitchen Smell Bad?

You walk into the kitchen, ready to pour your first cup of morning joe, and - phew.

A rotten smell hits your nostrils, sending a jolt up your back stronger than any cup of coffee ever could.

There's no getting around it - your kitchen stinks. But why? You've taken out last night's garbage, you regularly clean your floors and fixtures with vinegar. What's the source of that smell?

If you've been battling a mysterious kitchen odor to no avail, there could be a very easy solution to your problem. If you've already tried the basics, like cleaning out the fridge and emptying the garbage, then turn to your plumbing. There is one plumbing appliance you should always investigate for trouble - the garbage disposal.

With our thanks to 1800 Anytime, here's how to get to the bottom of your odor problem by taking care of your garbage disposal.

How to Check and Clean Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals can often be the elusive source of unpalatable kitchen smells. The cause of the odor can vary - from old, rotting fruit to leftover grease or bones, to mold and mildew - but there are some simple ways to track down the source.

First, start by checking that the seals on your garbage disposal are clean. Black mold can accumulate in broken seals, and could easily be the source of your unpleasant smell. If the seal is not broken, there could be a more pressing problem deeper down, in the midst of your disposal.

Don't fret yet! Before you call in a professional for help, there are some basic cleaning procedures you should try, to see if you can clean up the smell naturally.

You can clean your disposal pretty heartily using ice and salt. You can also try using fresh lemon juice to eliminate the odor, or pour baking soda and vinegar down the disposal to create a foamy reaction that will freshen up the mechanism.

Can't Get Rid of the Smell?

If you've tried conventional methods to clean your disposal but the foul odor still persists in force, you will need to call in a plumber for professional cleaning, maintenance, or replacement.

Ongoing odor after basic cleaning is a strong indication of a malfunctioning device or a severe blockage, which causes old food to accumulate and spoil. A plumber will be able to assess whether or not a repair or intensive cleaning will fix the condition, or if the entire unit needs to be replaced.

If a replacement is needed, be sure to ask your plumber for recommendations on a unit that will suit your home and your specific requirements.
