How to Fix Your Showerhead
Thankfully, for the DIY-ers here in Red Oak, there are some simple ways you can tackle a problematic showerhead yourself.
With our thanks to How Stuff Works, here are three all-too-common showerhead issues - and how to get your shower back in prime condition.
The Showerhead Arm Connection is Leaking
- Unscrew the shower arm from the pipe with a strap wrench (if you use another wrench, first tape the pipe to avoid scratching or damaging it).
- Clean the arm threads (the connection point) and coat them with either plumbers' joint compound or wrap plumbers' joint tape around the area.
- Screw the head back on and tighten it by hand. Remove any remaining compound or tape you see.
The Showerhead Swivel is Leaking
- Unscrew the showerhead from the swivel-ball ring.
- Find the O-Ring (a circular ring that prevents water from leaking out of the showerhead) or a piece with a similar function.
- Replace this part and screw your showerhead back together.
Showerhead Has Excessive Grit or Sediment Buildup
If you believe some issues with your showerhead have to do with some built-up grit or sediment within the showerhead itself, remove the parts individually and give them a good cleaning. Try soaking individual parts in vinegar; this is a great way to dislodge some of your mineral buildup. You can also scrape away some of the sediment, taking care not to scratch or damage any of your pieces.
