Home Maintenance Tips For You… And Your Wallet!

Air Conditioning

Your AC is sure to get a good workout now that the weather is starting to heat up, but what can you do to make sure your unit is equipped to last through the season? Dust and other airborne particles can also clog your system and render it inefficient, meaning it will have to work harder to keep your family comfortable. Be sure to change the air filter to prevent this clogging. As part of your spring cleaning routine, you should also make sure the drain pans are functioning and that no hoses have sprung a leak. These simple tasks can help you avoid expensive AC repairs this summer!

Plumbing Leaks

Something as seemingly minor as a leaky faucet can end up costing you loads on your utility bills. Make sure to check around your appliances, like your dishwasher, refrigerator and laundry machines, for any wet spots. Additionally, check for all exposed pipes for moisture to ensure all of the connections are sealed correctly. Hot water heaters can also become corroded, which can lead to leaks; an annual water heater flushwill help reduce the chance of corrosion and leaks.

Water Meter

Your water meter functions to measure how much water you use, so it is essential to make sure it is working correctly! Be sure to check it for leaks, or look to see if the meter is increasing even when water is not running in your home. Leaks in your water meter means your system is using water that does not get to you, but is still included on your bill! If you have a leak, odds are you will need a professional to fix it, so it is best to catch it early to prevent losing money to water waste.

Windows

If your windows are not properly sealed, that steamy summer air will make its way into your home and your cooled air will escape. Take a look at the caulking and weather stripping around your windows to make sure it is free of damage. Another sign of a problem is if you see condensation forming on the inside of the glass of your double-glazed windows; this could mean that the sealing is weak and either the glass or the entire window will need to be replaced.

Make sure your home is ready for warm weather by inspecting your HVAC and plumbing systems and catching minor problems before they become major issues. If you need professional maintenance, give Combat a call at (773)-724-9272. We’re happy to help!
