What Are My Home's Plumbing Systems, and Where Can I Find Them? (Source: pixabay.com - used as royalty free image)

For every eager DIY-er ready to break out their plunger or plumber’s tape at every opportunity, there’s a homeowner who’s all too happy to take a much more “hand’s off” approach to their plumbing system.

Here at Combat Plumbing, we respect both the weekend warrior and “let sleeping dogs lie” approach to plumbing; after all, it’s easy for a well-meaning homeowner to actually do more harm to their system than good. Still, it’s important to at least have a basic understanding of your plumbing system, including how it operates and where everything is located.

You’d be amazed at how many homeowners don’t know the locations of some of their most all-important water systems. Have no fear, we’re happy to help point you in the right direction!

In particular, we see homeowners ask about these five systems all the time. Wonder no more! Here’s what you need to know about your home’s…

Water Heater

In most Red Oak homes, the water heater will be located on the lowest level of the home, whether that’s a basement or ground floor. While there are many different types of water heaters in our city – including gas, electric, and high-efficiency “tankless” water heaters – they all work in roughly the same way, by taking in water from exterior supply lines, warming it, and then distributing that hot water to the appliances around your home. Most standard tank water heaters have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

Sump Pump

The sump pump is one of the most misunderstood systems in the home. Here’s how it works: The sump pump is located on the lowest level of your home. Over time, ground water flows into your sump pump’s basin; once enough water pools, a float switch activates the pump, which pushes this water away, either sending onto your lawn, a dry well, or into the municipal storm sewer.

Ejector Pump

An ejector pump deals with sewage and waste water, rather than standing ground water. Located in the basement, the ejector pump works when it collects a certain amount of sewage backup; once the pump is running, this waste water moves into your main sewer lines and subsequently leaves the premises.

Water Shutoff Valve and Water Meter

These two important elements of your system are often located near each other, typically in a low and out-of-the way utility area of your home, such as your basement, a garage, or on an outside wall.

Your water meter is a handy way to gauge the volume of water being used by your home, the better to monitor your efficiency and keep track of your water bill. The shutoff valve – typically a gate-type valve with a round knurled handle – is vital for curbing the flow of water to your home’s appliances during an emergency, or while your house sits vacant during a vacation. Don’t confuse your shutoff valve with other valves, including the buried curb stop valve and corporation stop.

Sewer Gas Systems

Because your pipes open into sewage lines, there is a natural amount of sewer gas that moves up through your system. Your system is designed to battle the odors of these accumulated gases; there is a trap for sewer gases located immediately down the drain from most of your appliances, and the top floor of your home will contain a vent stack, which feeds out through your roof in order to allow sewer gases to exit your system while allowing oxygen to get in.
