How to Keep Your Bathroom Clean With Young Kids Around

When you have a gaggle of young kids around, it’s easy for a bathroom to turn from a chic oasis into a scene out of a horror movie in the blink of an eye.

Don’t let it happen to your Red Oakland home!

Here are five easy ways to make your home’s bathroom cleaner, safer, and more fun for your little ones:

1.) Keep it Simple

We’re all for beautifully-decorated bathrooms – in fact, we love to stay on top of bathroom design trends from around the country. But when you have a gaggle of children running around, it can be a lot easier – not to mention safer! – to keep your bathrooms a little more sparse. The fewer things you have around, the fewer things you have to dust, straighten, wipe down, or replace at the end of the day, right? If you can’t bear the thought of a bare bathroom, switch to more durable decorations that won’t demand your constant care: Switch out your stark white towels for a darker, more forgiving color, for example, or replace any plants with their artificial lookalikes.

2.) Use Fewer Tools and Cleaners

In addition to posing health hazards to your plumbing and your family, keeping a ton of chemical drain cleaners around can quickly clutter up your bathroom. The same goes for tools. Rather than buying five different cleaners for every surface in your bathroom, free up your space – and make your bathroom greener and safer – by switching to a few all-natural, multi-purpose solutions, like vinegar and baking soda. And rather than buying every flash-in-the-pan plumbing tool you see advertised on late night TV, stick to the hearty basics, like those we talk about here.

3.) Cut the Clutter

Everyone with little ones knows that keeping a room straightened and tidy can be a losing battle. Cleaning away toys can feel a bit like tackling termites: For every one you put away, it seems like three arrive to take its place.

With that in mind, you can still set ground rules. Make your bathrooms a toy-free zone, or only allow your child to keep a few essentials in the room for bathtime fun, while you store the rest in a beach bag. And if your child has outgrown their kiddie bath accessories or potty-training tools, consider recycling or donating the goodies to new families.

Beyond toys, you can set a positive example for your kids – and keep your bathroom feeling cleaner – by maximizing your storage space. Set up lots of little baskets or shelves to reduce clutter, and be sure to take a fresh look at your medicine cabinet and the area under your sink. We bet there are some amazing storage opportunities that you can put it place, with just a little bit of ingenuity.

4.) Help Your Kids Learn Good Habits

Whether you’re trying to promote good hygiene habits or raise the next superstar pitcher for the Cubs, the adage is the same: Get them started young. In this case, you can promote positive habits in your kids that will hopefully help keep this – and all future bathrooms – cleaner. Reward your kids for making sure that their towels are hung up, that their toothpaste is sealed up, or that the toilet seat is always put down (or up) at the end of the night. Promoting a few sanitary habits can go a long way!

5.) Make Clean-up a Game

A family is a team, and it’s important to stress that everyone has a part to play. Encourage your kids to do simple chores under your supervision, like wiping down the shower or mirror or taking out the trash. You’d be surprised how eager younger kids may be to join in on the job with mom and dad. And if you need to incentivize your kids at first, consider putting on music, setting up playful challenges, or offering fun rewards. Before you know it, the whole family will be cleaning the bathroom together, leading to a cleaner house – and an even more tight-knit home.

Of course, there are always going to be some bathroom projects too big for your family to tackle on its own. That’s where our family comes in!
