How to Get Your Bath and Shower Ready for Guests (Source: pixabay.com - used as royalty free image)

Having guests stay over in your Red Oak home can be a great chance to reconnect with old loved ones, catch up on stories, and show off your neighborhood’s many charms.

But it can also be a bit of a hassle making sure that your kitchen, HVAC, and plumbing systems are up to the task of accommodating visitors for a few days.

Want to make sure your shower or bath are in top condition for your overnight guests? Here are five ways to get your bathrooms ready for company:

1.) Do a Little Cleaning

Having company come to stay may be the excuse you’ll finally need to tackle that bathroom cleaning you keep putting off. Before your guests arrive, take a good look around your bathroom and be ready to fix anything that seems grungy or uninviting. That might mean tackling mold and mildew, cleaning or replacing your shower curtain, and cleaning up the grout on your floors or wall.

2.) Make Sure Your Drains Are Flowing

Before your visitors arrive, run the water in your bath and shower to see if your drains are flowing freely. If you notice any backups or standing water, it may be time to break out the all-natural cleaning solutions to keep your shower draining smoothly: Clear up the clog with baking soda and vinegar or another green option, or break out the tools, like your trusty plunger or drain auger. And remember, whatever you do, we advise against pouring chemicals down your drain – these can not only damage your system, but negatively impact the health of you and your guests.

3.) Improve Your Water Pressure

Notice any sputtering or low pressure coming out of your faucet or shower head? Don’t let your guests strain to get clean! Instead, troubleshoot your low water pressure to locate (and treat) the source: The issue may be in just one or two faucets, meaning that it’s time change out an aerator. If it’s system-wide, check your pressure-reducing valve (PRV) or shut-off-valve. And if only hot water seems to be affected, then the heater or hot water lines may be to blame.

4.) Check Your Hot Water Heater

And speaking of your hot water heater, it’s important to give your unit the once-over before company arrives. After all, more people using your system means more hot water flowing down the drain. Will your system be ready to handle it? Make sure your water heater is in prime working condition, meaning that it’s properly insulated and free of odd sounds or odors. The little inconveniences that we take for granted, like sediment buildup, can really add up – and don’t they always seem to come to a head just when you’ve got guests? Avert the disaster before it strikes and have your water heater inspected and maintained today.

5.) Consider Making Some Green Additions

Want to get a jump start on shaving down on your bills before your guest arrives? Want to add some interesting conversation starters to your bathroom? Consider taking a few hours to undertake some easy, DIY green additions to your bathroom, including low flow shower heads. These little gems will help you save water and shave money off your bill each month – without reducing your water pressure.
