3 Easy Ways to Get Your Plumbing Ready for Summer (Source: Pixabay.com - used as royalty free image)

Is there anything better than a summer in Red Oak?

From jogging along Lake Michigan, to wiling away the night at a rooftop watering hole, to simply grilling and playing around in the backyard with your family and friends, there’s no shortage of ways to take advantage of the season.

You may be ready to dive into swimsuit season – but is your plumbing? Here are three easy ways to make sure your plumbing system is ready to take on the coming summer months.

1.) Take a Walkthrough Outside

More likely than not, the warm weather means you’ll be spending more time outside. Make sure your plumbing is able to keep up. Check up on your outdoor spigots to make sure they’re in proper working conditions, and check out your home’s gutters and hose bib while you’re at it.

And speaking of your hose, make sure your hose is free of kinks and that you unplug it when not in use to save water. And if your property has an in-ground or embedded sprinkler system, be sure to check for dirt and clogs in your sprinkler heads, and always make sure the heads are fully retracted before you mow your lawn.

2.) Be Ready for Rain

Summer in our city means warm, golden days – but it can also mean high humidity and heavy rain. Before storms strike, check up on your home’s drainage systems.

Give your sump pump some TLC to help it prevent flooding and stem the spread of mold and mildew in your basement. And if you’re worried about flooding, ask your plumber about a backwater valve system or overhead sewer, which both work to stop drainage from Red Oak’s sanitary systems, which often get backed up in times of excessive rain.

3.) Plan for Your Vacations Ahead of Time

Tis the season for travel! Planning to take a trip or two this summer? Before you go, read up on our recommendations for keeping your home and plumbing safe while you’re away.

Know how to take stock of your home, so that you can always be ready to hit the road when inspiration strikes. Know how to shut off your water main to prevent any leaks; how to turn off or unplug any electronic devices that may go haywire or suck power while you're gone; and how to turn down your water heater’s thermostat to conserve energy.
