Here's the Secret to a Clean, Fog-Free Mirror

Our plumbing can create all sorts of unexpected hassles around the house, from major challenges, like water damage or mold, to small annoyances, like a gunky shower curtain or fogged-up mirror.

And while it may be tempting to turn to some sort of out-there gadget as a way to keep your mirrors clean and clear, there are other solutions – and we promise that they can be cheaper, greener, and easier than you’d ever think.

So, how about it? Ready to keep your mirrors free of streaks, grime, and fog? Here are five unexpected mirror-cleaning hacks you should know:

1.) Use Shaving Cream for a Fog-Free Mirror

Could the lather you use on your face really help clear your mirror? Surprisingly, it can! Shaving cream is a great, affordable way to keep your mirror fog-free for weeks at a time. Simply apply a generous layer of shaving cream or foam across your bathroom mirror, then wipe it clean with a clean cloth or paper towel. Voila! Your mirror should be fog-free for up to three weeks.

2.) Put Vinegar to Use

We love vinegar here at Combat Plumbing; it’s an all-natural, affordable solution to a lot of common bathroom and kitchen problems. So why not put it to use on your mirrors, as well? In addition to giving your mirrors a streak-free clean, wiping your mirror with a solution of vinegar and water could help steam-proof it; for anyone worried about the odor, add a few drops of lemon juice to provide a fresh, clean scent.

3.) Ditch the Dish Rag for a Streak-Free Shine

Want the secret to a streak-free, lint-free shine? Try avoiding the paper towel or cloth the next time you give your mirror a wipe down. Instead, grab some newspaper! A crumpled up wad of newsprint may leave ink on your hands, but it will help you get a streak-free clean. Or, for those of us who have gone all-digital, you can get the same streak-free effect with paper coffee filters.

4.) Try Other Household Products

What’s the old saying? Man cannot live on Windex alone? Well, it’s true. If you ever find yourself pressed for a mirror cleaner or steam deterrent, try putting another common household product to work. Try using a very light coating of dishwashing liquid and water: Simply gather the mixture on your palm, wipe the mirror, and then wipe it dry with your towel or newspaper. For a slightly longer-lasting finish, try using car-wax or car window de-fogger. Just follow the directions on the packaging to apply, and then wipe the surface clean!

5.) Use a Blow Dryer

For those of us who can’t be bothered to treat our windows regularly, the blow dryer is a surefire way to quickly clear away your fogged up mirror. Just turn your dryer on low to medium and blast warm air at your mirror and you’ll see the water clear away before your eyes.
