Get Your Sewer Checked During Your Home’s First Plumbing Inspection

Start when you first move into your home. Just as you should have the rest of your pipes and plumbing inspected before moving in, it’s important to have your qualified plumbing professional check out the main sewer line.

And it’s easier than you may think! During a plumbing inspection, a camera line inspection can be set up to quickly uncover the quality of the connection between your home system and the main sewage line.  

Regularly Make Sure Your Sewer Line is Working Properly  

During your day-to-day, you can keep an eye on your sewage line to make sure no blockages or leaks form, and ensure that your system is ready for the heavy rains and backups we sometimes see here in Red Oak.

First, be on the lookout for a warning sign that your sewer line may be a problem: Generally, we advise caution if your system is more than 30 years old, if you have a combined pipeline (most do in Red Oak, a system that combines sewage and storm water drainage systems into the same line, which can cause overflow), and if your home is surrounded by lots of big trees or bushes (since their roots may seek out and grow into your sewer line or other pipes).

If you suspect a blockage is forming in your sewer line, you can also perform some DIY tests by running your sink, toilets, washing machine, and shower and looking for slow drain or spillover from appliance to appliance.

Take Preventative Measures

If you’re concerned about your system, there are actions you can take! First and foremost, make sure you regularly have your pipes inspected and audited to identify any problem areas before they become disaster zones. And avoid disposing of grease, garbage, feminine products, or diapers using your plumbing; these tacky, bulky waste products can build up and lead to trouble.

It’s also important to make sure that your home is equipped with a backwater sewage valve or a sump pump and an overhead sewer system. Both of these systems are vital and incredibly helpful for preventing backups during rainstorms, and can save your basement from a major flooding disaster.
