The sink is one of the main focal points of your kitchen’s design.
With that in mind, not every sink type will physically fit in your kitchen, and it’s important to know what sinks will work best with your system before you start a costly remodeling job. Here are the three most common mount options for kitchen sinks:
The Drop-in Sink
The most common type of sink mount, the drop-in gets its name because of the way it fits into a sink cut-out in your counter by literally dropping right into place. Once it’s in place, the sink is supported by its flanges, which overhang the cut-out in your countertop. Also called a “self-rimming” sink because of its large lip, the drop-in does tend to catch food and water residue along its edges, making it a regular part of your kitchen cleaning schedule.
The Undermount Sink
An undermount sink is installed underneath your countertop and supported by either a base cabinet or from specially installed supports on the underside of the countertop. Undermounts are most commonly paired with heavier countertops, including marble and granite.
The Flush Mount Sink
This style of sink is named for the way it sits flush with your countertop, meaning that there’s no lip, just one sleek line. Because flush mounts are commonly used alongside tile countertops, they are also sometimes known as “tile edge” sinks.
Whether it’s for tap water or to funnel your leftovers into a garbage disposal, chances are good that you’re going to use your kitchen sink every day. It’s important to make sure you have the right unit for your home.
